Taking their melodic cues from bossa nova and '60s pop -- and sourcing most of their sounds from those very same records -- Australian duo The Avalanches created a masterpiece of sample-heavy psychedelia with their debut album in 2000. Following the lead of hip-hop producers like De La Soul's Prince Paul, they pieced thousands of snippets of their record collection (Xavier Cugat, Free Design, Sun Ra, even De La Soul) into a brilliant, richly textured weave that seems to float in midair. Along with DJ Shadow's Endtroducing, this is one of plunderphonic music's greatest LPs.
