This Senegalese artist's background is all over his introductory album: He honed his craft as part of a large griot family and a member of the Senegal National Band, and that experience and craftsmanship is all over this careful, elegant album. He's also a drummer, and he sings like one: On each track, Diagne pairs his delicate, feather-kissed voice and an instrument in an intimate dance. Whether his partner is a waterfalling kora, a velvety acoustic guitar, a jaunty drum or even a saxophone ("Yonbi"), Diagne matches them, rhythmic pattern for pattern, texture for texture, in a perfect dance.
