Johnny Clegg

Clegg led an interracial group in South Africa during the closing (and most volatile) years of apartheid. He had global success with his upbeat, club-happy Afro and western pop -- the Police seem to have had almost as much influence on his sound as the music of his adopted African home. Although his lyrics have always touched on international themes, Clegg's career -- at least in the west -- has been hurt by the dismantling of the very system that helped make his music so unique.
