Luckily, there exist men like Donavon Frankenreiter and Ray LaMontagne who still look to 1970s California for inspiration. On his third album, the spiritual child of Michael McDonald and Stephen Stills digs even deeper into Southern soul, augmenting his raspy croon with horns, strings and female backup singers.
