Biography

The Refugee All-Stars' story is a study of hope in the face of tragedy and chaos. Forced from their homes in Freetown, Sierra Leone, by rebel fighting, three professional musicians -- Reuben M. Koroma, Francis Langba and Abdul Rahim Kamara -- rediscovered each other in a refugee camp in Guinea. As chaos raged around them, forcing them from camp to camp, they began making music, thanks in part to aid workers who gave them instruments and a rudimentary sound system. They wrote songs about their experiences as refugees, about their fears and hopes, and they drew in fellow refugees to lend their voices and talents to the sound. Followed by American documentary filmmakers as they navigated camp life and ultimately returned to Sierra Leone, the resulting film has become a sensation at several film festivals, while the album documents a band that moves effortlessly between roots reggae, highlife and traditional folk.
